A new phase for African betting puts integrity in sharper focus

In a new interview with iNTERGAMINGInterGaming and iNTERGAMINGi magazines, IBIA examines how Africa’s expanding regulated betting sector is reshaping the integrity landscape.

Three takeaways stand out:

1.           The growth of the regulated online betting market in Africa increases oversight of account-level data of consumers betting with licenced operators. It also means that cross-border information-sharing is increasingly important. 
2.           IBIA recorded 31 suspicious betting alerts linked to African sporting events in 2025, and 117 between 2021 and 2025. Higher alert numbers can reflect stronger monitoring and wider operator participation, rather than greater integrity risk.
3.           Monitoring alone is not enough. Stronger integrity protection depends on effective regulation and cooperation between licensed operators, regulators, sports bodies and law enforcement.

These priorities shape IBIA’s work across Africa. Through its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform (Global MAP) and partnership with the African iGaming Alliance, IBIA is supporting operator intelligence-sharing and closer collaboration on integrity, policy and regulation across the continent.

Africa’s markets are developing at different speeds, but the underlying need is the same: stronger monitoring, trusted information-sharing and practical cooperation.
